Non-Deployment tasks you can perform with PDQ Deploy or Admin Arsenal

One of the best kept secrets in I.T. is that software deployment tools are excellent choices for other Sys Admin tasks. The reason is simple: By the time a deployment solution (like SMS/SCCM, Tivoli Configuration Manager, Admin Arsenal or PDQ Deploy) prepares a client to receive a new software installation or OS patch all the necessary road work has already been completed to run just about any script or perform any sys admin task. From modifying the registry, updating local security policies or running backup scripts a good deployment tool is essential.

To that end here a cool Sys Admin task that you can easily perform via PDQ Deploy or Admin Arsenal.

Add directory to the %PATH% variable on all your computers.

If you want to re-use this batch file later on then you don’t have to hard-code the new entry, just place a variable (%1, see below) that will be populated when PDQ Deploy runs.

Of course if you don’t want to pass the parameter in via PDQ Deploy you can just easily place the %SystemRoot%\Cleanup2 value in the AppendPath.bat file.

To accomplish the same thing within Admin Arsenal I would recommend using the Remote Command feature. Using this method you can just pass the command straight to the Command Shell (CMD.exe) on the remote systems.

Hightlight a Collection or a computer and select Tools\Remote Command…

Type the following command in the Remote Command Line field:

reg add “HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment” /v Path /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d “%PATH%;%SYSTEMROOT%\Cleanup2” /f
